Charitable Distributions

Qualified Charitable Distributions from your IRA

You can support the work of Lutheran Social Services with a tax-wise gift from your retirement plan.

Donors aged 70.5 years or older can contribute money or stock (up to $108,000 annually in 2025) from a retirement plan directly to Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

Why the QCD is a tax-wise gift

  • If you are required to take minimum distributions, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your RMD obligation.
  • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.
  • Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. If you don’t need the income from your Required Minimum Distribution, donating some or all of your RMD to charity rather than receiving it as income may help lower your income tax owed, your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.

Contact your plan administrator to request the appropriate form to make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). Requirements may vary by plan, but most forms will require the following information:
