Home/Neighborhood/Community: Suburb

Years lived here:10 years

Community/Neighborhood: We live in an area that is family-friendly, well-manicured and very safe.  It's a beautiful location surrounded by lakes and trees, and there are several parks and biking/running trails for public use. There is a strong sense of community pride, and people know and care about their neighbors, which is unique.  It really is an ideal location for active families.

Holidays: Most holidays are spent with family (and, luckily, the majority live in the immediate area). Christmas and Thanksgiving are particularly important to us. Because we both love to cook, we typically host Thanksgiving, and make the entire meal from scratch as a labor of love for our family. Like most Americans who celebrate Thanksgiving, it involves watching a lot of football, too!  At Christmastime, we like to pay homage to our ancestors through making traditional ethnic dishes such Glogg, Swedish pancakes and Irish pudding.  Kyle's mom makes a Finnish rutabaga casserole every year as well. Also, we enjoy making homemade soy candles to give as gifts, and each year we use a different scent, and create a new label with a funny photo of our dog on it. Eileen's folks dress up like Santa and Mrs. Claus for the kids in their church as well. Easter is always spent with family, and typically involves going to church and meeting at one of the relative's houses for a late lunch. The 4th of July is one of our favorite holidays as well, and it's been tradition to have pool parties, grill out and watch fireworks. One year over July 4th, the entire family rented a large lake house in the UP Michigan and made a big bonfire, fished off the pier and watched the parade of festively decorated boats float by. That was a great time!

Vacations:  We both love history, so going to England and France was one of our favorite trips from an educational perspective; however, we also just like to relax on vacation, which is why we have such a soft spot for Florida (where we used to live).  Most years we take take a trip to Florida in the spring and Door County in the fall.  When we want to mix it up we like to take Caribbean cruises.  These are particularly fun when the rest of the family joins us. J

Family Gatherings: Because we all live in close proximity to each other, family gatherings happen rather frequently, and sometimes at the spur of the moment.

Dear BirthParent,

Hello, it's great to meet you!  We are Kyle and Eileen...

And we very much respect your decision to choose adoption.  After many years of struggling with unexplained infertility, we came to the conclusion that adoption is the right choice for us, too, and have learned from others-both birth parents and adoptive parents-what a blessing it can be for everyone involved.

How is all of this supposed to work exactly?  We're not entirely sure, but both of us believe strongly that God puts certain people in our lives for a reason, and should you be one of those people, know that we are here waiting with an open heart and a willingness to work collaboratively with you.

A little about us...  The honest truth is we are the best of friends, and one of our great strengths is our long-standing stability as a couple.  Together we have made it through some difficult times that were beyond our control, and yet have been able to keep it all in perspective and with our sense of humor intact.  We owe this all to our faith in God and complete love and trust in each other.

Overall, we tend to act like big kids ourselves most of the time.  That's not to say we're not responsible adults, but we like to laugh and tend not take life too seriously.  At family functions we're typically playing in the yard with kids and dogs, while the other adults opt to chit chat around the kitchen table.  We both serve as role models to kids as well:  Kyle is a director of youth sports and has coached baseball for years, and Eileen can relate to young people as she used to be a school guidance counselor, and understands where they are developmentally.

We both really enjoy spending free time with family and friends, and also being outdoors biking, going for walks/runs, and taking our little Georgia Peaches to the local dog park to socialize.  In addition, we love to travel, especially to any place where there are palm trees and a sandy beach
