Reflection for the Week of January 7, 2008

Scripture:

“Sarah said, ‘God has brought me joy and laughter.  Everyone who hears about it (the birth of Isaac) will laugh with me.’” (Genesis 21:6)

Reflection:

I spend several hours each week working with adults who are learning English as a second language.  Often we don’t understand each other, but there is a lot of gentle and supportive laughter.  Laughter is a great gift.  It breaks through the barriers that separate us. It helps us gain a sense of balance and perspective.  It is  balm for damaged emotions, and it helps us cope.

Prayer:

God of laughter, deliver us from humorless people and from the humorless in ourselves.  Help us to laugh when the unexpected comes, both when it is positive and when it is not.

You bring us the gift of joy and laughter.  Thank you.
