Scripture: “Each one should judge his own conduct. If it is good, then he can be proud of what he himself has done, without having to compare it with what someone else has done. For everyone has to carry his own load.” (Galatians: 6: 4-5)
Reflection: An old self-examination tool is called the Seven Deadly Sins. They are: (1) Addictive or exploitive sexual desire (Lust). (2) Over-consumption of anything (Gluttony). (3) Obsessive seeking of wealth or power (Greed). (4) Lack of love (Sloth). (5) Spite or revenge (Wrath). (6) Unfavorable self-comparison with others (Envy). (7) Inflated self-importance (Pride). While we cannot be free of these tendencies, God can amend them with the spiritual virtues of love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control.
Prayer: God of Wisdom, help us to understand that self-examination is neither self-condemnation, nor self-justification. Rather it is an opportunity for us to be honest and to allow you to nurture your virtues within us.
