Scripture: “Do not try to rule over those who have been put in your care, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that never fades away.” (I Peter 5:3-4)
Reflection: We cannot solve people’s problems for them, even though we sometimes strive mightily to do so. Our task is far humbler. First we help people to acknowledge the ways in which their behavior and actions are not working. Second we help them to discover possibilities and opportunities. Then, we encourage and support them as they take a new direction.
Prayer: We pray to God who, even though he could have been the master, chose to be a servant. There are times when we all would like to be the king or queen, and impose what we think is best on others. Help us to find meaning and joy in our humbler tasks, and to trust that such tasks bring with them a crown of glory that never fades away.
