Persons with Disabilities

A dedicated employee, an athlete of the year, and an award winning volunteer - these are just three of the amazing people with disabilities who Lutheran Social Services is privileged to serve everyday.

It wasn't long ago that people with any type of a disability struggled for their place in society. Community living was not an opportunity for them. With the 1980s, came sweeping changes that opened the doors for persons with disabilities to live and work in their own communities. LSS rapidly became a major provider of services that supported and encouraged people with disabilities to live fuller lives in their community.

Now, LSS serves more than 4,000 persons with disabilities, ranging from "round-the-clock" residential support, supervision within more independent living situations, or support to learn skills in order to remain independent. Developmental disabilities are defined by a person's cognitive ability. It can also include seizure disorder, cerebral palsy, head injury and autism. Those struggling with persistent mental illness also are served.

While developmental disabilities and mental illness present unique challenges, most people who experience them can live successfully in their own communities.  Their needs are the same as everyone's - to work and play, to enjoy a home and make choices, to love and be loved.  They want to live normal and independent lives.  LSS' programs respond to these needs and give persons with disabilities the chance to develop their abilities to the fullest extent possible.
