Thank you for your interest in the Refugee and Immigrant Services Program at Lutheran Social Services.  LSS helps refugees by providing case management services, job placement and sponsorship assistance. Sponsors of refugees agree to locate and furnish housing, meet and welcome the refugees, supply food and clothing for a short period of time, help the refugee family to sign-up for schools and other community services, and educate the refugees about American culture and customs. In the past, LSS has resettled refugee individuals and families from Bosnia, Liberia, Myanmar (Burma), Sierra Leone, Somalia and many other countries.

The United Nations defines a refugee as "any person with a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group."  Refugees are individuals who have experienced great pain and hardship.  These qualities have enabled them to survive difficult living conditions, and to adjust to a new culture and language in the United States.  These same qualities will make them valuable members of their new community.

Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan (LSS) is an affiliate agency of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services (LIRS).  Through contracts with the United States Department of State, we work to resettle a limited number of refugees in Southeast Wisconsin.  The most important part of our goal is to help the refugee family become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community where they live.

Refugee resettlement is a community program.  Although the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America supports us, we depend on churches of all denominations to co-sponsor families and demonstrate the compassion of Christ through service.

We appreciate your interest in refugee resettlement and invite you to follow the links to investigate the details of our program.  If you have any questions, please contact the Community Resources / Sponsor Developer at (414) 325-3164 or byork90@lsswis.org .
