FAST (Families and Schools Together)

FAST is an innovative and collaborative prevention and parent-involvement program in which families gather and participate in specific, fun, research-based activities aimed at strengthening families and empowering parents.

Dr. Lynn McDonald and three collaborative partners developed FAST in Madison, Wisconsin in 1988. FAST activities are based on proven theories justifying why and how to implement the activities in order to maximize their impact on the relationship-building process. The FAST program is now implemented regularly in 45 states and internationally in five countries. Three goals of the FAST program are:

  •     Strengthening family cohesion
  •     Developing more positive predictors of school success
  •     Increasing knowledge of alcohol and other drug abuse facts, issues, and resources

Schools, families and community agencies join together to participate in eight to ten weekly sessions. The sessions are 2-1/2 hours and are held at the school.
