Do you have extreme mood swings lasting for two or more weeks? If so,

When you are in an “up” mood do you frequently:

  • Feel expansive, uninhibited, capable of doing things that may seem over-the-top to others
  • Feel irritable, critical, argumentative, stubborn
  • Have a decreased need for sleep or stay up all night without feeling tired
  • Do impulsive or reckless things, like speeding, spending money, bad business investments, sexual misadventures, drug or alcohol over-use, without concern about the consequences of the activities
  • Refuse to accept the possibility that something may be “wrong” you’re thinking or behavior despite having loved ones voice concern
  • Talk so fast that others could not understand what you were saying or experience “pressured speech” where you feel like you can’t get what you have to say out fast enough
  • Experience racing thoughts with rapid shifts of attention

When you are feeling “down” do you experience:

  • Feeling depressed, sad, indifferent toward life
  • Loss of interest and pleasure in daily activities
  • Insomnia or sleeping too much
  • Loss of appetite or eating too much
  • Feeling slowed down or too agitated to sit still
  • Extreme fatigue and lack energy 
  • Decreased sexual drive
  • Decreased motivation
  • Decreased performance
  • Withdrawal and isolation
  • Lack of attention to hygiene and appearance
  • No desire to talk, interact, socialize
  • Feeling guilty, worthless
  • Inability to think, remember, concentrate
  • Marked indifference
  • Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts

Bipolar Disorder can be a debilitating mood disorder that causes problems for the sufferer across many life domains. Interpersonal relationships and workplace functioning can be greatly affected by the extreme mood swings typically seen in Bipolar Disorder. Psychotherapy can be a helpful tool, along with medication, in helping you to understand and cope with the disorder. Although Bipolar Disorder can make life difficult, many people who seek help are able to control the symptoms and live happy, productive lives.
